FRANKENSTEM is an experimental audio software that explores recombination strategies for sampling.

Using a selection of stems (from Drums, Bass, Synths, Vocals), FRANKENSTEM reconstructs stems randomly according to user settings, to produce strange and texturally rich audio to use in experimental music production.

FRANKENSTEM is influenced by musique concrète, post‑IP and post‑authorship philosophies, and the use of sampling as a creative and critical tool.

This project began as an artistic exploration of the 'digital self': to locate 'it', and understand my entanglement with it better.

In its form as an installation piece, it existed as a performance 'beyond the body': with an AI producing its own diary entries every 5 minutes, based on my own entries as training data.

For my dissertation, I used the model to write a posthuman, post-qualitative autoethnography - explorinng the collapse of a unitary subjectivity to a distributed subjectivity. Influenced by Haraway, Deleuze, Braidotti and others, the dissertation also reveals the epistemological and ontological tensions of researching the self through AI.
